about

“What wasn’t there” is a song about the way we tend to become obsessed with what we don’t have, leading us to overlook and devalue what we do. The grandfather clock running through the song is a reminder that we can waste our lives away like this.

It might sound like a strange inspiration for a folk song, but the phrase “he could only see what wasn’t there” was actually spoken during the film Ad Astra by the key character about his father, who had spent his life (and sacrificed his relationship with his son) obsessively searching for non-human life in faraway galaxies.
