about

This song is all about the cosier aspects of the winter season, in particular the way we illuminate the darker evenings and shorter days with candles, fires, and fairy lights. I was struck by the way the festivals of Diwali and Hanukkah celebrate light at this time of year and that the Pagan traditions many of us follow at Christmas do the same. I wrote the lyrics last year on the winter solstice, as the UK headed into a lockdown Christmas.

lyrics

The darkness bites just a little more
From the top and the tail of each day
So each one grows shorter and colder
And the weather gets wetter and grey
The sun has decided to leave us
No matter our wish that she’d stay

So come on let’s dig out the candles
Hang twinkling lights from the wall
Draw the thick curtains to shut out the night
Raise a glass to the sun one and all

We’ll make cakes from the fruits of the summer
Sweet jewels filled with pieces of sun
Mulled wine with spices to warm us
Made stronger with sugar and rum
It will fuel the fire in our bellies
For the cold and the hard days to come

So come on let’s dig out the candles
Hang twinkling lights from the wall
Draw the thick curtains to shut out the night
Raise a glass to the sun one and all

For these pretty winter lights are a tribute
That we hope will not be in vain
We try to tempt the sun back to us
So she’ll warm our cold backs once again
The skies will turn blue and the flowers will bloom
But ‘til then in the dark we remain

So come on let’s dig out the candles
Hang twinkling lights from the wall
Draw the thick curtains to shut out the night
Raise a glass to the sun one and all
Oh come on let’s dig out the candles
Hang twinkling lights from the wall
Draw the thick curtains to shut out the night
Raise a glass to the sun one and all
